CAN ANY UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD BE STORED FOR PUBLIC PURPOSES?

Although you have been selected as a compatible donor, it is unfortunately impossible to guarantee that your cord blood will be fit for storage and subsequent transplantation. Around 20% of all donated cord blood units is stored. In some cases, cord blood is unfit for storage, particularly if it is contaminated during the collection procedure or if drawn in insufficient quantities and, therefore, does not contain enough cells or if it is not delivered to our bank within 46 hours. With your permission, such blood will be used for research purposes that have been confirmed by the Republic of Slovenia National Medical Ethics Committee or destroyed in a proper manner.
