BLOOD TRANSFUSION SERVICES IN SLOVENIA

The Slovenian Blood Transfusion Services comprises the Slovenian Institute for Transfusion Medicine (SITM) with its pertaining  units in regional hospitals (Novo mesto, Trbovlje, Slovenj Gradec, Izola, Jesenice and Nova Gorica), the Transfusion Medicine Centre at the Maribor University Medical Centre (UMC), including its units in Ptuj and Murska Sobota, and the Blood Transfusion Centre in Celje.

Blood is processed into blood components at the Slovenian Institute for Transfusion Medicine in Ljubljana, the Transfusion Medicine Centre at the Maribor University Medical Centre and at the Transfusion Medicine Centre in Celje. 

The Slovenian Institute for Transfusion Medicine Ljubljana processes the blood collected at units of BTC Novo mesto, BTC Trbovlje, BTC Nova Gorica, BTC Slovenj Gradec, BTC Izola and BTC Jesenice. The Transfusion Medicine Centre at the Maribor University Medical Centre processes the blood collected at units  Murska Sobota and Ptuj. Blood Transfusion Centre in Celje processes the blood collected locally.

Blood pathogens serological screening is performed at the SITM in Ljubljana and at the Transfusion Medicine Centre at the Maribor University Medical Centre, whereas the NAT screening is performed centrally in SITM Ljubljana.
