Telemedicine in blood transfusion

At the turn of the century, BTC began developing telemedicine. In 2003, BTC performed its first telemedicine service in the Slovenian blood transfusion service. In the years that followed, telemedicine was introduced into all Slovenian blood transfusion institutions, integrating the information systems into a whole.Telemedicine is used to perform mandatory pre-transfusion tests from a distance. From its own location (e.g. BTC in Ljubljana), a specialist in transfusion medicine examines, reads, orders further tests and authorises the issue of blood at other locations (e.g. BTC) , where a medical laboratory scientist carries out pre-transfusion tests. The computer teleconsultation system covers the entire blood transfusion service in Slovenia. Around 20,000 telemedical services are performed annually, allowing us to provide the same quality of services and generate considerable savings within the healthcare system.
