HAEMOVIGILANCE

Haemovigilance is a set of organised surveillance procedures relating to serious adverse or unexpected events or reactions in donors or recipients of blood and blood components, and the epidemiological follow-up of donors.

Any information provided within the frame of haemovigilance helps improve the safety of blood transfusion and explains the risk for an adverse transfusion effect and ways to minimise the risk by introducing additional measures.

The key objective of haemovigilance is to warn users and providers that by detecting adverse reactions in due time they can prevent even greater damage, i.e. if an incident has already occurred.

Blood transfusion centres are obliged to collect information about all adverse reactions and severe adverse events and notify them to the Haemovigilance service at the Blood Transfusion Centre of Slovenia.
